Nothing Is Sure

Taxes
and death are sure
to hunt you like a hound
all the days of your existence,
dear sir.

Dear sir,
you would be wise
to mend your errant ways
before the days of your demise
approach.

Approach
the Judge’s bench
and hear the warning words
he says to such a one as you
this day:

“This day
you may be called
to give your life’s account.
If so, sir, will your account be
ready?”

Ready
or not, the time
will come to all men, for
“Nothing is sure except death and
taxes.”
