I Remember

The memory of you fills me so much
that from afar I feel, smell, see, and hear.
I remember
your chocolate eyes, your woodsy scent, your touch—
missed you in September.

I can still feel the warmth of your embrace;
the image burns in my mind much like a
glowing ember.
In air my hands extend, your features trace—
I’ll miss you in December.

The music of your voice sings me to sleep,
to dream of you, and wake with you at dawn.
I don’t know why
I try so hard your memory to keep—
I saw you in July.

Invented form patterned after Edward Taylor’s “Upon a Spider Catching a Fly.” He was considered the greatest colonial poet, although his works were not published until 1939.
Stanzaic, may be written in any number of cinquains
Metered: iambic, L1 = trimeter; L2, L4 = dimeter;
L3 = tetrameter; L5 = monometer
Rhyme scheme: ababb cdcdd… (at least near rhyme)
