Fairy Tales

I don’t listen to a lot of country music, and what country I do listen to is happy music: John Denver’s Country Roads, Unkle Kracker’s Smile, Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, etc. But one day I was driving down the road, and the words to this song started playing in my mind, complete with a melody. I have no idea if the melody belongs to someone else, but as far as I know, the lyrics are original with me. The tune has not been written or recorded yet; it’s still stuck inside my head. But I hope you like the words….

Fairy Tales

Fairy tales are meant to have a happy ever after,
Dreams come true are not supposed to fade.
I’ve forgotten what it’s like to fill the room with laughter;
How I wish the love had always stayed.

They used to say we made the perfect couple;
We looked so good together, people said.
Opened up my heart till I believed that I could love him,
Called our friends together, and we were wed.

Time went by. At first it seemed so perfect,
Learning how to love and share our hearts;
But then things changed when one dark night he began to hurt me,
And he nearly tore my soul apart.

Fairy tales are meant to have a happy ever after,
Dreams come true are not supposed to fade.
I’ve forgotten what it’s like to fill the room with laughter;
How I wish the love had always stayed.

Ups and downs will come to every couple.
A quarter century with him I stayed,
As on my knees I asked the Lord to somehow make it better;
Faithfully for him so long I prayed.

When he was gone, they looked to see me crying.
They didn’t know my tears were from relief.
My happy-ever-after finally came the day he left me;
Better days ahead is my belief.

Fairy tales are meant to have a happy ever after,
Dreams come true are not supposed to fade.
I’ve forgotten what it’s like to fill the room with laughter;
How I wish the love had always stayed.
