What, my soul? Why all the tears?
Why the haunting, faithless fears?
And why the worry on my brow
Because I cannot see just how
This troubled time will come to pass?
I fear the future days, alas!
But now reflect—remember when
The Lord sustained time and again.
Go back, then, a little way
To the choice mercies of yesterday
And I will plain as daylight see
That God has not forgotten me.

Italicized lines from Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotional, January 25, a.m.
Isaiah 63:7 I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which He hath bestowed on them according to His mercies, and according to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.
This seems like an appropriate poem with which to draw the year to a conclusion. So many marvels I see behind me; so many misted peaks I see before me. In a way, January 1st is just one more day, but somehow it seems to take on much more meaning when we turn the calendar, not only to a new month, but also to a new year. As the calendar turns, so we turn our eyes toward new hopes, new dreams, and yes—new fears. What a comfort to remember that we can go back a little way to recall God’s choice mercies of yesterday and then proceed with the confidence of knowing He is still with us today. I look forward to crossing those peaks, watching the fog lift, and discovering what wonders God has awaiting me in the year 2018. What about you?
Oh, wow. This resonates with me on such a powerful level. Thank you! Thank you! I’m bookmarking this one and will read it again and again.
