Fidelity

Six months ago the date was set
For our big wedding day;
You said yourself that we had met
Because God led the way.

The problems came: you went up north,
And I was southward bound;
Apparently I wasn’t worth
The wait, and so you found

Another girl to take my place,
But, dear friend, why the rush?
You couldn’t tell me face to face;
It would have made you blush.

It would have been far better had
You never led me on;
Your timing, sir, was very bad—
To wait ‘til I was gone

To tell me that it’s over and
You’ve just become engaged.
Before the phone had left my hand,
The news had me enraged.

How could you be unfaithful to
The one for whom you cared?
Or did you lie about that, too?
The happy times we shared…

The precious moments—all too few—
The weeks, the days, the hours
Were filled with loves I thought were true,
But they were paper flowers.

But soon my rage gave way to grief,
And grief gave way to fear;
Yet from my fear God gave relief—
His peace is very dear.

I left you just four months ago,
Not knowing what was planned;
But whether it’s in God’s will or no,
I’m sure it’s in His hand.
