The Color of Love

Red is the color of love? I say, No!
For as I travel through valleys and hills,
Some red I see: in evening’s sunset glow,
In flowers, and sometimes in little birds’ bills,
Yet red is no more seen than orange or yellow.
But green! All shades of green my eyesight fills!
The leaves, the grass—if not green, they are dead.
But stare at green, then close your eyes. You see red.

I wrote this poem just for fun. I was sitting on a bench overlooking a valley and distant mountains. Nearly completely surrounded by green, I surely thought that green must be God’s favorite color. Since God loves us supremely and created all things, green must be His color of love, for He used it so very much. And green is, after all, very easy on the eyes. But a return to the color red in my poem was quite natural, since they are, after all, complementary colors.

  1. Loved those last couple lines- you wrote that you created this for fun, and I could definitely tell- because I had fun reading it as well. (Would you look at that, I just rhymed myself!)

Whoever decided red was the color of love anyways? I never considered it until I read this poem, but I think that’s the magic of poetry (and writing overall)- it has the power to introduce new thoughts and feelings to people.

I thought I’d followed you last time I read a piece of yours, but for some reason it must have not gone through. Such a lovely piece. Thanks for sharing!
