My Greatest Gift

Five decades.
A lot of birthdays.
A lot of Christmases.
A lot of gifts.

One year you strolled into my life,
made yourself comfortable,
and stayed.
Oh, it wasn’t easy—
not for you or for me—
and it took more years than it should have.
But you stayed.
I’m glad you did.
You needed me,
you just didn’t know it yet.

How do two nobodies both manage
to fill a void?
Could it be
that when we added our zeros together
we got a sum that could not be counted?

Fifty Christmases.
And you are still my greatest gift.
