I love the time of day when all is still…
The early morning, crisp, and cool, and wet,
When somewhere far away the sun’s just set.
If I must rise at dawn, well then, I will—
But staying up at night is better yet.
Written for #OctPoWriMo and Quadrille Monday #67 at dVerse Pub, hosted by Kim. This week we were called upon to write a poem of exactly 44 words about ‘early:’ early childhood, early memories, early morning, etc. Normally I would write something brand new for the challenge, but this poem, which already existed in my folio in a slightly different format, immediately came to mind. And since I’m rather short on time, I pulled it up and counted the words to see if I could use it. Only 36. Rats. Or maybe not. Could I revise it and turn it into a Quadrille? Yes! I added a line to bring the word count to 44, changing the rhyme scheme from abab to abbab, and now it’s a brand new poem. Sort of. 🙂 You might say I got an early start on writing it, since the first draft was written 16 years ago!Â

Early morning is my favourite time of day, Abi! I Although I haven’t read the original poem, I admire the work you have done to produce a brand new quadrille. I especially love the lines:
‘The early morning, crisp, and cool, and wet,
When somewhere far away the sun’s just set’.
This is just how it was this morning, when I was reading and commenting in the UK while the poets whose poems I was reading were just starting their evenings!

Thank you, Kim. Some of what you quoted is new and was inspired by my growing sense of awareness of others around the globe, with whom I connect here on WP. We were thinking on the same wavelength. 🙂

I love the middle of the day… early morning and late nights are both hard on me.

I used to pull all-nighters quite frequently, but my body won’t let me do it anymore. However, I have discovered a joy in rising at 2 a.m. for a road trip. Oh, the roads are peaceful at that time of day, especially when I am not fighting sleep. 🙂 And I love to watch day break upon the sky.

I like mornings more and more. It’s getting harder to stay up at night and easier to get up in the morning. The things age does to a person! Lol… Thank you for your comment.
