Don’t get me wrong. I find the night sound of chirping crickets to be quite calming. In fact, I love the outdoors at any time of day. However, recently—out of necessity—I traded my outdoor writing space for an indoor office. You see, I have reentered the workforce as a proofreader and member of the clerical support staff. Now, instead of cardinals calling to their mates, I hear my trainer giving instructions on how to perform my new duties. Instead of my sonorous wind chimes, I hear the campanile striking every quarter hour in the distance. And instead of the soothing chirping of crickets, I hear coworkers chattering about assignments and deadlines. Air conditioning is nice, for it staves off the oppressive Florida humidity. But each day after work, I rush back to my beloved outside air—humidity and all—and once more drink in the scents, sights, and sounds of all the creatures God created.

The sounds of nature have a definite calming effect. They should be piped into every work atmosphere! Great haibun!

You hurl us into the reality of your daily life which takes you away from nature but nature keeps teasing you. And what could be better than, at the end of a tiring workday, to walk back into her healing arms.
