In passion’s afterglow,
While beats and breaths rein in,
Ecstasy bursts into whispers,
Declaring love lately expressed.
I wait for your echo….
The sound of silence chills my dewy flesh.
I’m puzzled—
Yet in saying nothing,
You tell me everything I need to know.

With this one poem I am responding to two dVerse challenges simultaneously. On Monday Mish hosted Quadrille #61 in the which she challenged us to write a poem of exactly 44 words on something puzzling. Then in Tuesday Poetics, guest host Dwight Roth asked us to write about “The Sounds of Silence.”Â
In my little vignette, silence is puzzling at first simply because it is unexpected. But little by little the heat of truth burns off the mist of mystery—or does it? Is the silent lover sending a message of apathy with his silence? Or is he simply hard of hearing? or drowsy? Sometimes we jump to hasty conclusions by inferring too much from the silence. The speaker in the poem would be far better off to revel in the silent companionship than to stew over imagined conflicts.Â
It’s so true… such silence says it all.

Nice line: “The sound of silence chills my dewy flesh.” as well as the ending.

Thank you, Frank. Silence does speak volumes, but it can also be misunderstood.

Stunning. I especially love “While beats and breaths rein in, / Ecstasy bursts into whispers” . So much can be said with silence….

Thank you, Mish. The restriction of the Quadrille form helped a lot. I had to edit like crazy to say what I wanted to say in 44 words.

The skeptic in me demands that I think there is trouble in paradise, but your point is well taken, perhaps we are too quick to jump to conclusion in the heat of silence!! Great Poem!

Thank you. I reckon most trouble starts when we jump to conclusions. Insecurity and a lack of trust can also skew our interpretation of silence.

This line slayed it for me: The sound of silence chills my dewy flesh.
Funny how silence says it all. Apologies for the late visit.
