Here You Are

Here you are
The bow after my rain
The light beyond my darkness
The water in my well…
For so long I sought you
Among kings and beggars
Friends and lovers
Saints and sinners

And now here you are.
You found me—
The trill of the sparrow’s song
The dew on the leaf
The sky-blue-pink of dawn…
I am beautiful
But I am missed by most

And yet you took notice.
You—the best of men.
Why?

If it’s me you truly want, then
Here you are.

Written in response to “Poetics: Getting Personal” a challenge at the d’Verse Poet’s Pub blog crafted by Amaya in the spirit of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself.” I took some liberties with the theme and spoke only a little about myself, for I wanted also to allude to one of my all-time favorite love songs, “Here You Are.” I suppose I missed the mark when it comes to writing a speed dating blurb, for I simply described what he saw that no one else picked up on. But perhaps Amaya and my other readers will grant me some leniency there.

I wish I could give credit for the love song, but I cannot find it on the Internet, and I don’t know who wrote it. I have an audio recording on a CD somewhere, but I memorized it long ago and now replay it only in my mind.

  1. I’d say you answered the prompt in even more than one way. You’re searching for The man, and the song, “Here You Are.” If you want to find it and you know the lyrics, try typing them into a Google search bar, or at least a line or two from it. There’s also songmeanings.com and you could try there too.

    1. Thank you so much! I have tried typing in the lyrics, but my search brings up other songs with similar words. I’ll try songmeanings.com. I had not heard of that before. Thanks
