“This is really happening”—turn and dash
Then came the crash
“What on earth was on her mind?” Through the light
Caused such a fright
Slammed the brakes and pressed them hard—car destroyed
Airbags deployed
Still alive, and conscious still—but the pain
The mounting pain!
Though healing will be long, yet I foretell
All will be well.
And yes, this is a true story. A little over two weeks ago my daughter and I were in a car accident when a young woman made a left turn in front of us while we had the right of way. I slammed on the brakes but could not avoid a collision. Our car was totaled and hers damaged, but all of us left with only minor injuries. Nevertheless, I’m in a lot of pain, and they say it could take a couple months for my injuries to heal. My daughter is okay now, and I don’t know about the other driver, but I hope she’s okay too.

Five couplets, usually in iambic tetrameter or pentameter.
This one is written with split couplets, (alternating lines of 10 and 4 syllables).
Rhyme scheme: aabbccddee
The rhythm is complex in this one, as I focused more on syllabic count than on rhythm. I ended up with trochaic rhythm on the odd lines and iambic rhythm on the even lines. Line 9 is an exception to this, as it too is iambic and part of the denouement.
This is lovely.

It’s not all bad, for it’s forcing me to slow down, rest, and let other people do things for me. 🙂

Absolutely! It hurts to laugh right now because I have a torn tendon in the chest wall… but I can still smile from ear to ear, and I am. 🙂
